Amar Majuli is a local community based organization, created by Majuli island's local communities together with young Israeli volunteers. In 8th October 2014 was registered under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860. Amar Majuli works together with floods and erosion affected poor, rural communities in order to create tools, opportunities and inspiration to improve their well being in Majuli. Our work is based on a strong believe that the local heritage, trust based relationship and creativity are the primary resources for bottom-up sustainable development in Majuli. We work with over than 200 households from more than 25 villages that are affected by floods and erosion in three major fields: Women's empowerment, Sustainable Agriculture and Local volunteerism & youth leadership. Based on the island, Amar Majuli's Executive Committee is led by the President Mr. Bedabrat Dutta and the Secretary Ms. Minu Gam.
What we do-

1. Women Empowerment, social & Economical Mobilization:
The heart of Amar Majuli's community work in Majuli is the work with 'Rengam Women Weavers Cooperative members. The goal of Rengam is to provide its' 80 members and their families with sustainable livelihood in the fields of hand-loom and eco-tourism while maintaining their rich cultural heritage. Since Rengam's inception Amar Majuli has been supporting the cooperative's members through a capacity building process including: professional trainings, skills development, guidance and assistance in formal meetings, exposure visits, facilitation of their connection with reliable national and international fair trade market partners, while protecting their rights and ensuring their independent future.
The Women Bicycle Banks:

Amar Majuli facilitated and supported the establishment and running of the first women Bicycle Banks in Majuli. Poor women in remote villages can purchase bicycles by comfortable loan through the Bicycles Bank. The innovative cycle bank increases the women mobility and improves their livelihoods opportunities. The cycle banks are now run independently by 'Juri Got' - Self Help Group, in the village of Namuni Chumoimari and by Indira Self Help Group in the viilage of KolaMoa.

2. Agriculture: From subsistence farming to sustainable agriculture
The organic agriculture training program runs in a unique partnership with Farm 2 Food Foundation: An Assam-based NGO. The program provides practical tools for poor farmers, aiming to increase sustainable agro-economic productivity in environment friendly manner. Among our agriculture initiatives are the establishment of community demonstration plots for the demonstration of simple and effective eco friendly technologies such as drip irrigation, and organic agriculture trainings in order to qualify a group of leading farmers as trainers who will pass the knowledge and practices in their own villages.

3. Volunteerism & Social Activism:
With the goal to encourage local activism for community-led development, we established and support a local volunteer group. Coming from different communities, the groups dedicated members carry out initiatives for the benefit of the most vulnerable parts of society, such as poor widows. At the same time we develop the personal skills and capacity of the group members in order to be a better citizen and to be able to achieve better employment opportunities.
