The rag-pickers lack any other employable skill and are hence condemned to lead a life of penury and discomfort. Their job poses them at a high risk for health diseases and their measly incomes prevent them from rising through the economic ranks in life. Most are unable to provide their children education and other necessary facilities.

Project Prakriti aims to utilize the expertise of rag-pickers to create something of value for the society - organic compost, the single most important supplement required for growing of plants and trees.

Composting is an inexpensive, natural process and requires only a steady source of compostable garbage. The end product is manure, which is a commercially viable product.
Compost is used as a natural alternative to fertilizers and is considerably safer.

By creating something of value from what is considered wasteful, Project Prakriti will help divert green and brown wastes from the areas around Shahbad and provide the rag-pickers an alternative profession.

They can now become creators of a new product and market it, in the process taking on entrepreneurial roles.
It is necessary to empower the existing rag-pickers by improving their health conditions and helping them to face the limitations that stop them from moving on to better and bigger places in life.
