Set amongst shady palm trees but at the same time only 100 metres from the sea, Arakal Heritage offers the discerning traveller a paradise retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday India. Here you can experience first hand the simple joys of life in the tranquil setting of an India homestay.

From the moment you set foot on Arakal Heritage, you are our honoured guests. And, for as long as you stay with us, you are part of our family.

Welcome to our corner of paradise, our family heritage, our family home for generations. Welcome to Arakal Heritage!

Your stay with us:
Our aim is to make your stay at Arakal Heritage as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. So, if your idea of paradise is simply chilling out, reading a good book, sun bathing with occassional dip in the sea and enjoying the finest of South Indian food, then that is fine by us. On the other hand, we can provide a range of activities for those who wish to do more.

Go for a cycle ride:
Borrow one of our bikes and take a leisurely trip round the local village. Many of our guests have found this to be a fascinating way to explore the surrounding area.

Ride an elephant:
On request, we can arrange for an elephant to be brought to Arakal Heritage for you to ride - an experience of a life time!

Take a boat trip with a local fisherman:
If your sea-legs are up to it, why not spend a few hours out at sea with the local fisherman. See how the sea food that ends up on the table for your evening meal is caught.

Have an ayurvedic massage:
We can arrange for a range of Ayurvedic treatments to be administered by highly qualified traditional 'Vaidyas' (Ayurvedic Doctors).

Paddle a canoe on the backwaters:
Why not use our canoe to take a slow leisurely trip on the backwaters? An ideal opportunity to try your hand at a spot of fishing or to spot some of the abundant bird life.

Arakal Heritage is situated just outside Marari village just 16km north of Alappuzha and 75km south of Cochin International Air Port.

Nestled between the backwaters and the beach, our accommodation comprises 5 double room cottages, one of which is fitted with air-conditioning.

The History of Arakal Heritage:

Over 300 years ago, at a time when merchant ships sailing from Europe visited the Malabar Coast in search of rich trade in spices, our family set up our home in this beautiful part of South West India. And, to this day, we remain proud of the fact that travellers from around the world seek out Arakal Heritage in search of the rich beauty and serenity of Kerala.

We belong to an aristocratic Catholic family, which over the years has produced many distinguished local chiefs and community leaders.

My Grand father Mr Jacob Arakal distinguished himself as a lawyer, judge and community leader. After returning from the Travancore Judicial Service as a District Judge, he entered the banking business and was the chairman of a local bank.

My father Mr Thomas Arakal had an early encounter with the field of cinematography, which was still in its infancy in rural India at the time. However because he was an only son, he had to return home in order to respect the wishes of his parents, thus abandoning a successful cinema career. Back home, he pursued a wide variety of interests and involved himself in local politics. He was elected as the President of the Local Panchayath (county).

My maternal grand father Capt. Dr. R T Thomas served in the British Indian Army during World War I. During a distinguished army career he served with the army medical wing in Mesopotamia in 1917.
