About Sri Arakkal Kadappurathu Bhagavathi Temple in Madappally/Vadakara-2, Vadakara

Devotees of this locality believe that this temple is about 700 years old. This temple belongs to ’MUKAYA’ community populated mainly at Madappally and Korapuzha in Kozhikode District . Though this is a community temple, Festivals are celebrated with the participation and co-operation of all irrespective of Caste, Creed or religion. Ezhava (Thiyya) community has this right of Thandan. The age old friendly and cordial relationship with the Muslims is still continuing. There is a Lotus Pond connected with the temple close to the sea. It is wonderful to note that though the pond is only 30mts away from the sea, the water in it is free form salt and plenty of lotus bloom every year. Main Goddess of this temple is ‘AMMA’ Bhagavathy (DEVI) along with her daughter-‘MAKAL’ Bhagavathy. Each of them has separate temples. Besides there are separate temples for Bhagavathy, Daivathan, Kshethrapalan, Gulikan,Vishnumoorthy etc. Devotees of this Community engaged in fishing has strongly believe that they are protected and saved from rough sea and weather and bring wealth by the grace and blessings of ‘AMMA’-they call as ‘Katalamma’. All kinds of pooja, Archana, Nivedyam etc are performed by the Kshethram Uralanmar of the community widely known as velichappadan and Karanavan. The most important Festival of this temple is POORAM. Seven days pooramahotsavam begins with ‘kodiyettam’ in Rohini (star) day and ends with Araat on Pooram starting in the month of ‘MEENAM’ Thousands of devotees take part in the festival and receive blessings of God and Goddess in and around the main temple. This temple originally belongs four families of this locality. About 35 years back this temple was handed over to the community through a registered deed keeping the right of ‘Uralanmar’ to perform Pooja and other rituals of this temple. Since then every year a committee is elected for the smooth and effective administrator of the temple.
