NEWS (Network for Empowerment of Women and their Sustainability) is a network working for more equity of Dalit and Tribal women in Tamil Nadu. 35 voluntary organisations from seven districts (Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri) united to improve the situation of downtrodden women.
The contemporary Indian society is still witnessing caste discrimination even after six decades of liberation from the British Raj and the installation of democracy.Dalit and Tribal women have not yet been liberated from the clutches of the caste system.Due to a lack of awareness and support hundred thousands of Dalit and Tribal women suffer from violence, sexual abuse, denial of rights and entitlements and inaccessibility to economic enhancement schemes.
NEWS wants to change the state of Indian women especially in Tamil Nadu. To manage this mission NEWS promotes awareness rising on basic rights and entitlements, legal rights and procedures to redressing their grievances when exploited, abused and discriminated and implements projects for liberation, development and empowerment of Dalit and Tribal women. As part of this NEWSsupports the organisation ofDalit, Tribalwomen and most deprived women in self-help groups (SHGs) for socio-economic, political, and cultural empowerment and to enable them to lead a self-reliant and self-sustained life through income generating programmes suitable for their occupation and place of living. Additional NEWS also wants to support a sustainable development of the women through empowering them with programmes for health care, personal hygiene, education and environmental sustainabilityso they are able to look better after themselves and their families.
For an effective implementation of the project and to ensure sustainability of the project’s goals NEWS cooperates with local Panchayats, government officials, local, national and international organisations.
