About Lok Vikas Sanstha in , Surat

Lok Vikas Sanstha has been working in health sector from 2002 onwards. We understand that health is the basic right of all the citizens of India. This has been recognized by the government, but the efforts of the govt. need to be supplemented and complemented by NGOs. Our work in the field of prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, Reproductive and Child Health has contributed to the fulfillment of this right of our citizens though in a modest way. Apart from projects funded by government, we work in partnership with private industries and organization. Essar Logistics Ltd. and Reliance Industries Ltd., in Hazira area, are valuable partners who have supported our projects in various ways. We also take opportunity to recognize the support of Volkart Foundation, Mumbai, for supporting VATSALA project focusing on maternal and child care in eight villages of tribal area of Nizar block.
We understand that no projects can really improve the situation of a community unless the community itself participates in its own development. Our efforts have developed a group of 80 part time workers and more than 400 volunteers in various villages where work. They are a very significant manpower at grass root level. We have also initiated Gram ArogySabhas, meetings of villagers to discuss their problems and find solutions about health and sanitation. An important outcome of these meetings was the recognition that the amount of non-degradable garbage – plastic- is increasing in rural areas because of aggressive marketing of various products like Gutkha, single use cosmetics, toiletries etc. The village Panchayats are not capable of handling this. In the coming years, we plan to pursue this and other issues of sanitation in more focused manner. This would require not only bringing in innovative solutions but also behavior change in a big way.

Lok Vikas Sanstha, registered as a non-government organization, is working since 1998. The organization has worked on various projects on health, environment and women empowerment. We have also undertaken smaller projects on disaster management and urban development. The organization has an excellent record of working with reputed agencies like Gujarat State AIDS Control Society, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,UNICEF, UNDP, Institute of Economic Growth and Gujarat Ecology Commission. The organization has worked with corporate sectors like Reliance Industries Ltd., Essar Logistics Ltd., Ambuja Cement, DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd. and O.N.G.C.
