As of 2001 India census,[2] Magam had a population of 4306. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Magam has an average literacy rate of 42%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 54%, and female literacy is 29%. In Magam, 19% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education
Magam is now growing as an education hub in the District of Budgam. The literacy rate is better than other towns of Budgam District, Magam has a number of schools from primary level to college level. Magam has three higher secondary schools, Government Boy's Higher Secondary Institute, Government Girls Higher Secondary Institute and R.M.P.Higher Secondary Institute and at Secondary level Green View Public High School, Alamdar Public School, New Convent School (CBSE). These institutes are imparting teaching in arts, science and Commerce streams. Magam has recently given a Degree College, which started its class work in March 2012. The college has started a professional course also in Tourism and Travel Management.

Magam is the largest business hub of Budgam District of Jammu and Kashmir. It has two J&K Banks; JK Bank Gulmarg Road and JK Bank Court Road. Police stations of Magam, Beerwah and Khag are working under the Sub District Police Officer Magam. Magam has also a Fire Station at Court Road.Magam has also a Munsiff Court or Tehsil Legal Services at Court Road. It has the status of Semi/Naib Tehsil. Magam has a Power receiving station of 12 MW at Gulmarg Road. There is also a Sub Divisional Office of Road and Building.
