A Glorious Journey of 50 Years
In the year 1962, the Siliguri Diesel Shed was established and came into being for the maintenance of YDM-4 locomotive. It was the year 1983, when I put my first step in the shed. During that time, the shed was holding 76 YDM-4 locomotives. Along with this, the shed was performing the POH schedule of NF railway based YDM-4 locomotives. From that time onwards, the marking of the shed developed day by day with prestige and honor.
In the year 2000, another new and mammoth challenge was taken by our Diesel Shed of the maintenance of NDM-6 locomotive. The shed supervisor commissioned the loco, and for the first time in the history of Darjeeling Himalaya Railway (DHR section), the loco along with four passenger coaches ran from NJP to Darjeeling. The train was inaugurated by the MR and it was a great achievement by the Diesel Shed, as the challenge came out with great results.
Besides this, the shed has 140 tons crane for the accident relief train and its maintenance schedule and out of course repairs are carried out efficiently and successfully by the shed. In the meantime, the shed has been performing IOH of WDM-2 locos with agreeable results. In the year 2005, the railway board decided to develop a new EMD loco in the Siliguri Diesel Shed. Finally the shed was constructed for the maintenance of 50 EMD locomotives. The first EMD loco 12064 WDG-4 came to our shed on January 2007. Day by day the number of locomotives increased and at the same time for the maintenance of another 50 locos, a new shed was constructed. Presently our shed is maintaining 164 (WDP-4 and WDG-4) locos. A Numerous modifications have been done in these locos both from mechanical and electrical sides which were highly appreciated by RDSO Lucknow, Railway Board and DLW. We are providing 57 locos for passenger link and also maintaining 107 goods locos. Through our staff training and quality circle meetings, the knowledge, efficiency and the skill of our staff members is increasing day by day; as a result the ratio of the loco failure is also decreasing.
Presently, Siliguri Diesel Shed is the second largest EMD shed all over India .The Siliguri Diesel Shed has undergone a drastic change during its history. It was a great achievement for the shed and even for the working members there who signified the main key for this success. We hope and are in the assurance that our Diesel Shed will make more and more progress in the future.
