Meghalaya means The Abode of the Clouds. It is a north eastern state bordering Bangladesh in the south and Assam in the north, it is reputed to be the wettest place on earth but is also a land of caves, with more than 1500 according to B.D. Kharpan Daly, General Secretary of the Shillong based Meghalaya Adventurers' Association which was formed in 1990. One reason for the abundance of caves could be the heavy rain in the region reacting with the limestone deposits. He claims with confidence that the figure would go up to 2000.

The Association organizes expedition within Meghalaya on a yearly basis,Caving commence from the month of October to March the following year and being the wettest place on earth, Rainy seasons are off seasons for the organisation. An international team from the UK Europe & America of about 30 to 40 professional cavers has been doing research and mapping the caves since 1990 till date and it seem to never end but for a time span of one month every year.We have also trained the Indian Arm Forces to become professional cavers,so far the Indian Navy & Air Force has been our first client in the span of 4 years and now growing to the different section of the Indian Arm Forces.

Caves form a unique and vulnerable part of our natural and archaeological heritage. Their protection and to know them scientifically in a better way is important in many reasons. Caves also constitute a valuable scientific resource, providing evidence of human cultural change and the development of our landscape as well as changes in our climate. As a nationally rare and integral element of our national heritage, caves are worthy of protection in their own right. There is a moral duty to protect them for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations. Meghalaya Adventurers' Association is based on strengthening the Science and Technology, to take proper care of National Heritage, an abiding love for and faith in India and the brotherhood of mankind.

We also have a commercial wing called Meghalaya Adventure Tours (MAT), where we create packages for tourist & cavers as well off all ages and size, where we train them for a few hours before we allow them to explore Show Caves" which are very safe and no risk involve whatsoever.
