Carved from the erstwhile State of Assam, Meghalaya became a full fledged State on January 21,1972. Bounded on the North and East by Assam and on the South and West by Bangladesh, Meghalaya is spread over an area of 22, 429 sq. km.

Meghalaya is credited with being the wettest state in India with some areas receiving rainfall as high as 1200 cm annually. The little town of Cherapunjee is very famous for it’s world record status of receiving the most rainfall in a calendar month.

The southern face of the plateau is marked by deep gorges and abrupt slopes, at the foot of which, a narrow strip of plain land runs along the international border with Bangladesh.
