“All that I know about life, I have learned from films” is a child’s graffiti which was seen along the walls of a certain high school. These are simple lines but the implication is indeed of a very high magnitude. It drives home the point that films do not seek to only entertain us but in them lies a whole range of life teaching skills. Film viewing can therefore be a spiritual experience which can sooth our souls, quickens our imagination and feeds our minds.

Shifting our attention to the media scene of the north east in general and Meghalaya in particular, the common observation is that it has undergone a drastic change particularly in the film culture. From an era of watching Bollywood and Hollywood productions only, we have reach the stage where we are churning out our own films to the extent that this year, the first Khasi film Awards have been instituted. Annually we are catering to an audience of approximately Sixteen lakhs a year. We, at the Mass Media Department, St. Anthony’s College believe that electronic images are the main expression of modern man and that those who can create these images effectively are going to be the opinion makers of tomorrow. Our endeavour is to make modern image-makers of quality, responsibility and relevance. In their endeavors as film makers, we can boldly say that our students have contributed largely to this change in the Media Scene of Meghalaya and elsewhere in the north east with a good number of them who have gone into creating films of their own.

With a view to create a serious film viewing culture, the Mass Media Department of St Anthony’s College, Shillong will organize a film festival titled ‘Indie8 Film Festival’, which will celebrate the growth of the film industry in our region. This festival will showcase the socio cultural relevance films of the region. We are also looking at incorporating workshops, film competitions and panel discussions where prominent film makers of the country will be invited as resource persons.
