About Rotary 3240 in , Shiliguri

Rotary International (R. I.) DISTRICT 3240 lies in the North Eastern part of the Indian subcontinent between Nepal, China, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. To the north of its is bordered by the mighty Himalayas and on the southern end is the Bay of Bengal. Territorially, this district is one of the largest Rotary districts in the world covering over 2,95, 607 sq. km (two lakh ninety five thousand six hundred seven) of land. Closeted within these perimeters is a land of snow clad mountains, verdant hills, expansive plains, mountain streams, majestic rivers, bustling towns, idyllic hamlets and miles and miles of land carpeted by lush green tea bushes. R.I. District 3240 is a relatively new district formed in the Year 1990 and encompasses nine states of India -Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and eight revenue districts of West Benagl. (Barddhaman, Birbhum, Malda, Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri & Cooch Bihar). There are 71 clubs in the district with almost 2450 Rotarians.

In tune with the district’s staggering topographical variations is its cultural diversity- the result of the coexistence of a number of ethnic groups, religions, languages, races and cultures. The District has some of the most beautiful sights to offer to visitors. The majestic mountain ranges, hill stations par excellence in Darjeeling, Shillong, Gangtok, Kalimpong, Mokokchung, Haflong, Kohima, Aizawl and Imphal, etc., wildlife sanctuaries of Kaziranga, Manas, Jaldapara, Orang and Pabitora, the world largest riverine island Majuli, all combine to make this district a fascinating region. Besides tea, the economy of the district is hinged on the industrial belts of Durgapur-Asansol, the coal fields of Raniganj, Ukhra, Kulti of West Bengal, Ledo of Assam and Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the locomotive industry of Chittaranjan. The oil producing region of Assam in Sibsagar and Digboi, cement industries in lime stone rich Jaintia and Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, orange and cardamom groves of Mirik, exotic orchids and horticultural products of Sikkim and Kalimpong and the delicious mangoes of Malda. But, singularly the greatest attraction of the district lies in its traditionally warm hospitality - a fact one must actually experience to believe.
