The district has 8 taluks, namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputhur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar. As of 2011, the town had a population of 29,398.The town is located in the bank of Vaippar river. Sattur taluk has contents of black soil around the town, suitable for crop cultivation.
