About Dept. of Fisheries. Ramnagar College in Depal,Purba Medinipur, Ramnagar

Ramnagar College was established on the 9th September, 1972 as co-educated college in Depal village situated in Ramnagar II Block under Contai Sub-Division of Purba Medinipur District (Erstwhile Midnapore District,) West Bengal by a society of the same name. From its very inception, the college is committed to fulfilling the noble objective of promoting “educational facilities of all types, including studies in Arts (Humanities), Science, Technical and Vocational Courses” as narrated in the Self Study Report. This college initially began its journey as an Arts college, but, with the passage of time, its activities have expanded in order to cope up with ever-increasing demand of the educational need of the students coming from hinterland areas. As a result, the college now offers education in Arts, Science and Commerce. In 1995, the college took initiative for opening up vocational courses in tune with the mission launched by the UGC and teaching on Industrial Fish and Fisheries started in the college. In 2014, the college successfully introduced two UGC-sponsored B. Voc courses (Hospitality and Tourism Management & Fishery and Farm Management). In the same year, the institution introduced four PG courses under distance mode in Bengali, English, Sanskrit and History. Thus the college Management has been actively trying to translate the mission-vision- objective of the college into reality.
The course-curriculum offered by this institution is prescribed/ determined by the affiliating University (previously University of Calcutta, now Vidyasagar University, Midnapore) and other activities such as admission, examination and others are managed mostly in pursuance of the rules and regulations set by the regulatory authorities, i.e. Vidyasagar University, Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal, University Grants Commission etc. Thus the college does not enjoy enough autonomy in the areas like framing curriculum, finalizing examination system, assessment procedures etc. But even in its limited capacity, the college contributes regularly and significantly to a few limited issues such as designing curriculum through the Teachers’ Council’s suggestion and some individual teachers’ contribution to the Board of Studies (BOS) and the UG Council.
The affiliating university has provided several programme options to the students. The college at present has the capacity of extending opportunity to the students to choose from as many as Sixteen(16) Hons subjects and Eighteen (18) General subjects to be studied in three streams (as stated above). Besides, teaching is also imparted to one B. Sc (Major) course and two B. Voc courses are recently been introduced with the object of expanding skill-based higher education (Skill level, 5, 6, and 7) among the students of this locality in the line of All India Higher Education Programme & Policy. The college, in the meantime has arranged to offer two short courses, that is, Spoken English and Spoken in self-finance mode for improving the ability of the students to face challenge emerging at national level.
The college regularly conducts Personality Development Programs which enhance the IQ level and communication skills of the participants. The college has a vocational course named Industrial Fish and Fishery and this Department was established in the year- 1994 and an honors course named Aquaculture Management established in- 2007.
