Initially the concept of "Andaman Galley" was originated and to promote and spearhead adventure, curiosity , risk taking abilities and exploratory spirits in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Jewels in the crown of the Bay of Bengal, offering abundance of irresistible underwater attractions, virgin beaches, active volcano, uninhabited Islands breath taking scenic beauty, variety of life, adventures of scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, yachting, game fishing , trekking sun bathing or merely relaxing and sight seeing in the lap of mother nature par excellence, so pure and unparalleled anywhere else and to salute and pay tribute to Captain Archibald Blair (founder of Port Blair) but for him, we would not have been talking to you.

In 1789, Captain Archibald Blair of the Bombay Marine (the East India Company's Navy), acting under orders from the government of Bengal, established a penal colony on this site, and named it Port Cornwallis in honour of his commander, Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. By 1858, the first European settlers on the islands, who were established near the site of the old penal colony, renamed it Port Blair in honour of Captain Blair.

A Galley is a type of ship that is propelled mainly by rowing. Virtually all types of galleys had sails that could be used in favorable winds, but human strength was always the primary method of propulsion. This allowed galleys freedom to move independently of winds and currents, and with great precision. The galley originated among the seafaring civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea in the early first millennium BC and remained in use in various forms until the early 19th century in warfare, trade and piracy.

Galley also refers to the kitchen established onboard a craft providing food supplies to the occupants.
