പേരിന് പിന്നിൽ
നദിയുടെ തിട്ട(കര)യിൽ നിരനിരയായി മനോഹരമായ പത്തനങ്ങൾ (ഭവനങ്ങൾ ) ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന നാടായിരുന്നതിനാലാണ് പത്തനംതിട്ട എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായതെന്നു പൊതുവേ കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.[1] എന്നാൽ ഈ സ്ഥലനാമോത്പത്തിയെക്കുറിച്ച് രസകരങ്ങളായ മറ്റ് അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. പുരാതനകാലത്ത് വിവിധ ജാതിയിൽപ്പെട്ട പത്ത് ജനവിഭാഗക്കാർ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ജനപദം എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ “പത്ത് ഇനം തിട്ട” എന്ന് ഇവിടം വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും പിന്നീടത് ലോപിച്ച് പത്തനംതിട്ടയെന്നായി എന്നാണ് അത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു അഭിപ്രായം. ധർമ്മരാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്ത് തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലേക്ക് ആവശ്യമുള്ള ചരക്കുകൾ എത്തിച്ചുകൊടുത്തിരുന്ന പ്രമുഖനായൊരു പത്താൻ വ്യാപാരി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിനും അനുയായികൾക്കും താമസിക്കുന്നതിനായി രാജാവിന്റെ അനുമതിയോടെ ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് കുറച്ചു സ്ഥലം ചുറ്റുമതിൽ കെട്ടി മറച്ചുനൽകിയെന്നും, അങ്ങനെ ഈ സ്ഥലം ആദ്യമൊക്കെ “പഠാണിതിട്ട” എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടുവെന്നും, പിൽക്കാലത്ത് അത് പത്തനംതിട്ട എന്ന് ശബ്ദഭേദം വന്നുവെന്നുമാണ് മറ്റൊരഭിപ്രായവും.

ചരിത്രം
പുരാതനകാലം മുതൽ തന്നെ ഒരു വാണിജ്യകേന്ദ്രമെന്ന പ്രശസ്തി പത്തനംതിട്ടയ്ക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മലഞ്ചരക്കുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ഉൽപ്പന്നങ്ങൾ പത്തനംതിട്ടയിൽ നിന്നും അച്ചൻകോവിലാറ്റിലൂടെ ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ എത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു. വാണിജ്യകേന്ദ്രം പിൽക്കാലത്തൊരു ഉപ്പു പണ്ടകശാല മാത്രമായി ഒതുങ്ങി.ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ആദ്യകാലം മുതലേയുള്ള സുപ്രധാന ഗതാഗത പാതകളാണ് ടി.കെ റോഡ്, പുനലൂർ - മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ റോഡ് എന്നിവ.

ഭൂപ്രകൃതി
2642 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്ററാണ് പത്തനംതിട്ടയുടെ വിസ്തീർണ്ണം, ഇതിൽ 1300.73 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ സ്ഥലം വനപ്രദേശമാണ്.










Pathanamthitta is one of the most beautiful town in the central Travancore region in Kerala. The town is a muncipality and is the administrative capital of Pathanamthitta district. The city of Pathanamthitta is one of the most beautiful places in Kerala and is known for its religious harmony and an amazing literacy rate. With a population of around 38,000, it is one of the largest towns in the central Travancore region in Kerala. Pathanamthitta is home to the famous Hindu pilgrim centre Sabarimala and also boasts of other major pilgrim and tourist destinations in Kerala. Pathanamthitta is also know as the ‘Pilgrim Capital of Kerala’ as it houses various important pilgrim centers for Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Pathanamthitta is a fastly developing city and a reliable business center as it is one of the best places for various business activities.

Pathanamthitta is also connected to the other cities through road, but does not have a railway station or an airport in the proximity of the Municipality. The nearest rail head is at Thiruvalla, which is around 25 km away. A lot of eminent personalities have emerged from Pathanamthitta in various fields.
