Meaning: “Irmãos” is a Portugese word known as “Brother” in English.
History: The origin and date of formation remains unknown. However, it has been noted that such groups were formed centuries back in various churches in India and around the world. Sadly, the existence of this group of people is slowly diminishing in various parts of the world due to the changes in culture and lifestyle of the people. The know existing of such functioning groups in and around Mumbai include in churches of Kalina, Irla, Bandra, juhu,Versova, Gorai and Byculla. One of the oldest religious ritual/custom/tradition! of Christian churches passed on by our ancestors for many generations.
Members: The group size is restricted to 45-50 members with men from different age groups. Every year new additions are made Post completion of 2 years of service, the new members are presented with the traditional clothing once the consent is received from the existing members.
Oath: All the members of the group are sworn to take an oath in church in the presence of a Priest to abide and adore the activities carried out by this group.
Attire: The members of the group can be easily identified.. It includes a “white cape” and a “red cape with hood” which is worn over it.
Activities: Meetings are conducted throughout the year to plan various activities to be carried out in church. The group is highly active during “Lent”.
