About Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid - Bunder, Mangalore in JUMA MASJID ROAD - BUNDER, Mangalore

Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid located in Bunder, Mangalore is believed to have been built sometime around 646 AD, very close to the life and times of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh). The Arab Muslim traders who landed here on business are said to have built it in the first place. Two Masjids in Kerala preceded this one in establishment. Cheraman Masjid in Kodanagllur built in 622 AD which was followed by Malik Dinar Masjid in Kasragod built a couple of years later.
THIS IS MANGALORE'S FIRST AND INDIA'S THIRD MASJID (MOSQUE) !

Historical background:
When the Arab Muslim traders first set roots in the Malabar coast and around this city, they are said to have endeared themselves to the local populace very well. The prominent leader among them was Hazarat Malik bin Dinar, who settled at Cranganore. Raja Cheruman Perumal of Malabar is believed to have offered them his gracious hospitality. One of the ten mosques allowed to be built by the Raja was the Zeenat Baksh mosque. It was inaugurated on Friday, 22 of Jumail Awwal month in 22 al Hijra, corresponding to year 646 AD, with the first Qazi Hazarat Moosa bin Malik, son of Moosa bin Abdulla. The mosque has special religious significance and connotation for the Muslim community because the pioneers who set up the mosque are said to have been the kith and kin of 'Sahabas' (or associates) of Prophet Mohammed Rasulullah (SA) himself.

The Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan, ruled Mangalore in the latter half of the 18th century and during his reign he got the mosque renovated with intricately carved wooded pillars. The ceiling set on the roof also is said to be part of his generosity.
