S.C.D Government College for Boys is named after Satish Chander Dhawan - a renowned Space Scientist, who like many of his disillusioned compatriots migrated to the USA, and had a long and illustrious career at MIT, Massachusetts. Other famous alumni include the well-loved poet Sahir Ludhianvi, the economist M S Gill, union HRD minister Kapil Sibbal, the retired police chief KPS Gill, and film-director David Dhawan.

It is located in the center of Punjab in the Malwa region on the southern bank of the Satluz. Its latitudinal and longitudinal extent are at 300-34 and 310-1 North and 750-36 and 760-9 east. Ludhiana is almost a flat plain and slopes towards south westwards. Its altitude ranges between 300 m in the east to 220 m in the west. It is spread in an area of 159.77 sq. m. At present the total population of Ludhiana is 1895053. The mean summer temperature is 32.50 and the mean winter temperature is 14.10C. The annual average rainfall is 68 cm.

The college makes admissions on the basis of the academic record of the students. Oral tests are conducted during the lectures to determine the aptitude of the students. Advanced learners are identified for special coaching to improve college results qualitatively. Similarly slow and weak learners are singled out for extra coaching to improve the results quantitatively.
