About Mbgips in PB NO. 1, Kozhikode

The Malabar Botanical Garden & Institute for Plant Sciences (MBGIPS), an institution of the Government of Kerala, administered by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), dedicated to the conservation and research on aquatic plant diversity, lower group plants, endangered plants of the erstwhile Malabar Region, as well as disseminating knowledge on various facets of plant sciences. The major research areas in which the garden is concentrating is in creating live gene bank on aquatic plants which could lead to the establishment of Malabar Aquatic Biopark, establishment of a live conservatory for the lower group of plants as well as establishment of an eco education and eco conservation centre at MBG. The plants are presently conserved in the garden in various sections according to their natural habitat. Important sections include Sarovar and Aquagene (Aquatic plant Conservatory and nursery), Water Queens (Germplasm collection of Waterlil;ies), Sanjeevani and Sarpagandha (Herbal garden and nursery), Rheedea (Live hortus Malabaricus), Star Forest (Mythological Garden), Bodhi (Plants of the epics), Janakiya (Endangered plants in green houses), Rockery, Butterfly garden, gardenia (Ornamental garden), etc. A botanical museum is also established in accordance with the school and college syllabi for providing educational facility to students.
