Highlanders from over 70 villages gether on the source of small rivulet THAL in Yamkeshwar Block, Distt, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand annually to celeberate "GINDI KA MELA" (festival of the ball). This remote place comes alive with the arrival of villagers from various parts of the district. Most Uttarakhandis are originally inhabitants of Rajasthan. They migrated to Uttarakhand during the
Mughal period. The fair was hosted with the aim of providing a platform to the migrants to gather at one place and meet each other. the Gindi ka mela was organized to exhibit bravery and strength. It is annually played between the Ajmer and Udaipur Pattis of Yamkeshwar Block. Village Nali of Ajmer Patti comes to the Mela ground in the form of a procession. Traditional drum beaters accompany the villagers. They are also asigned the work of preparing the ball for the mela. According the traditions, the ball is made from the skin of a dead cow. Before stitching the ball, a round shaped root of a wild plant called Gindadu, are packed inside the ball and the average weight of the ball goes upto 15 kg.After reaching the mela ground with the ball, the Ajmer Patti challanges the Udapur Patti. When the Udaipuri's are sure that the rival team has reached the middle of the ground and they have the ball with them they charge across the ground. And with this the game of rural Rugby begins. the uniqueness of the game is the striking feature of there beeing no refree and an unlimited number of players on both side. No rule no regulations. Villagers pushig each other for the ball! if the man with the ball falls down people show no mercy and the poor fellow gets buried with people on top. with the ball remaining grounded most of the time, the game goes on till late evening. Earlier it used to be hosted in a big way with every married girl of both the Pattis ensuring their participation in it. In the Past years the fairs was the way to see each other in the relation. During the British rule a unique provision existed for the mela and up to 7 casualties during the game were allowed and considered normal. The players are known as "GINDER" and are looked up to with respect and honor in the Village. Some of the famous Ginder were in the past, Chhawan Singh, Brahma Pahalwan, Mahima Nand, Bishnu Datt. and abhi jakhmola, gauravEven today, serving army men come home on leave to represent their Patti. Now a days this Mela needs to protect as a heritage of Garhwal because due to migration the number of the crowd is decreasing year by year. and the traditional form of the Mela is disappearing. The tourism deptt should advertise and provide facilities to this Me this is my awsome homtwn thalnadi ND MOST of great nd cute preson abhi jakhmola
