MUSIC IS a feast for the ears. At the Regal School of Music and Arts in Kollam, it is a feast for the body and mind as well. According to the director of the school, Stephen D'cruz, it is not just music that is taught at the institute. It is much more than that; it is therapy through music. Irrespective of the age of the students, the school aims at making the students acquire a rhythm in life by studying music, says Mr. D'cruz.

The school targets all-round development of the students through the medium of music.

Even as he worked for 25 years in England as an engineer, Mr. D'cruz remained passionate about music. He was a prominent member of the choir attached to the St. Anselmn Church in London.

During his schooldays, Mr. D'cruz had floated a troupe, Zero Limits, along with his brothers who shared his passion for music. In 1971, the troupe bagged the second place at the South India Beat Competition held in Thiruvananthapuram. For him, Zero Limits opened new vistas into the world of melody. Mr. D'cruz dreams of making music a part of everyday life for those in Kollam. He feels that the right training in music will make life melodious. The music classes conducted by Mr. D'cruz comprise aptitude assessment and general etiquette with the help of audiovisual aids.

The school, recognised by the Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Akademi, is the authorised premier institution that provides training for music grades conducted by the London-based Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). The maiden ABRSM examination for the students of the institute will be held next year. As a prelude to the examination, the ABRSM examiner, Collin Tipple, was at the school earlier this month to address a seminar on the ABRSM examination syllabus and system that has been recognised by 90 countries.
