About Technology and Cinema in Bengal: A Historical Overview in The Media Lab, Jadavpur University, Kolkata

The Media Lab is holding a weeklong exhibition in the month of August to commemorate 100 years of Indian Cinema through an overview of the technological history of cinema in Bengal from the 1930s till the 1970s. The exhibition will focus on the people who work behind the scenes as technicians, the machines they weild and the techniques they invent or adapt to. While we are all aware of the big names in the industry, we hardly know of technicians like Ramananda Sengupta and Mahendra Kumar (cinematographers), Purnendu Bose (Asst cinematographer), Balaram Barui (sound recordist) Kali Prashad Ghosh (Editor).
The centenary of Indian Cinema is being observed across the country and abroad by various institutions, but no one has so far addressed the crucial relationship between technology, technique and film. The Department of Film Studies and The Media Lab, Jadavpur University have a large collection of old films, . photographs, rare books, manuscripts, video interviews and essays. The exhibition will draw from this rich collection to bring this neglected but very exciting area into view.
