The trade union movement of Officers in the Banking Industry particularly in our Bank has been unique and eventful. Upto early 1970’s, Bank management used Officers as a tool for perpetuating their interests without sharing any information of the management with the Officers’ community and foisted rigid service conditions coupled with indignities and injustices. Social and cultural barriers were built around the Officers. A trade union was beyond their imagination. Resentment started developing. Officers were feeling suppressed, repressed and depressed. At that crucial juncture during 1976 a few eminent leaders like Com. V S Kaimal, Anil Kumar Jana, P R Balasubramaniam, AVM Shanmugasundaram, S. Ramesh, George Philip and others came forward for formation of a Officers’ Organisation which ultimately came in reality by formation of Indian Bank Officers’ Association Eastern Zone.

Indian Bank Officers’ Association Eastern Zone held its first conference in 1976 and Com P R Balasubramaniam & Com V S Kaimal were elected as President and General Secretary of the Association respectively. A strong demand was raised from Eastern Zone and few other Zones like Bombay and Karnataka to convert the unitary form of organization to a federal structure which came into being in the year 1977.

Indian Bank Officers’ Association Eastern Zone held its first annual conference in 1977 under federal structure and Com. A K Jana & Com. R B Mishra and Com K K Nanda at Orissa, then Com. S K Verma and Com. K K Thakur at Bihar, Com. Dipak Baruah, Com Arun Kumar, Com. Amitabha Kumar at North Eastern region and many others with their excellent leadership quality renforced the organisation throughout the Eastern Zone. The common demands of the officers were crystallized and organization was consolidated on the line of trade union. Majumder was elected as General Secretary & Com. Biswanath Bardhan as President. On 9th December, 2012, General Body Meeting resolved to hold Tri-ennial General Body Meeting instead of Bi-ennial .

Anil Kumar Jana also held the office of Officers’ Director of the bank from 1992 – 1998 and secured a rightful position in the affair of managing the bank through representation in the board and by participating in various industrial relation forums at different levels.

All India Indian Bank Officers’ Association, played a very important role in the foundation conference held on 6th October, 1985 at New Delhi which saw the emergence of a strong and vibrant organization - ALL INDIA BANK OFFICERS’ CONFEDERATION (AIBOC) representing more than 90% of the supervisory cadre.

During the crisis period of the bank in the year 1995 - 2002 when the existence of the bank was a question at that crucial period, the Indian Bank Officers’ Association Eastern Zone played a vital role for arriving consensus for signing a M.O.U. by sacrificing the existing rights of the employees and officers for getting the required capital assistance from the Government of India.
