John Maynard Keynes once remarked, “Even the most practical man of affairs is usually in the thrall of the ideas of some long-dead economist.”

It is an irrefutable fact that economics pervades almost every aspect of our existence. It serves to demonstrate that the all of our lives are inextricably intertwined. And any organized pursuit of a social science that occupies a space of such immense importance in all of public discourse must involve questioning conventional wisdom and understanding the multitude of incentives that the common man faces. For years, the Department of Economics of Presidency College (now Presidency University) has engendered the true spirit of independent inquiry and sensitivity to social concerns among its students, in addition to providing a thorough instruction in the theoretical and technical knowledge that the subject demands. That the list of the alumni glitters with the names of Amartya Sen, Bimal Jalan, Asim Dasgupta, Pranab Bardhan and Amit Bhaduri (to name but a few) is a testimony to the culture of this department.

The Economics Society of Presidency University is an endeavor to carry the tradition forward.
