About Milon Pathagar in 53/22, Santiram Rasta, Howrah

Milon Pathagar (Regn. No. - S/6458 of 1964-1965) started its journey in service of the local booklovers in 1952; passionate common people and distinguished locals endeavored to acquire its new property of an independent library building in 1974; the foundation stone was laid by then Minister of Education- West Bengal, Mr. Mrityunjay Bandyopadhyay on 26th May 1974. Many luminaries of art and culture have graced this modest institution with their presence. Writers- Late Ashapurna Devi, Nimai Bhattacharjee, Singer- Late Bimal Mukherjee are very few to name of this distinguished list.
Until around fifteen years back from now not only it remained a vibrant Centre of booklovers but also it incubated many local talents by means of regularly hosting cultural programs of performing and other nature.
However, mismanagement, apathy and lack of initiative gradually took charge and led this august seat of culture to eventual doom. Today the building is rendered dilapidated and books (which approximated a mighty 8000 at its heydays) have given way to colossal debris. This not being as organized and well managed as a Government sponsored organization might have easily let itself the harm’s way.
For many years this has been causing pain to many sensible persons of the locality. To add to it, we have noticed tremendous interest in current local population in support of this Library’s reopening and it has been resoundingly endorsed by many who love books, culture and community service.
Now we strongly feel about restoring this institution to the fullest of its past glory and take it even further; many thoughtful people have come together and since last few years we have been making constant endeavor with our own limited capacities. However, it is mere redundant to mention that in today’s harsh realities, effort of such dimension requires massive resources which are well beyond the means of the patrons in their individual capacities.
We therefore invite and seek all possible assistance in terms of advice and resources from all possible stakeholders.
