About Supratheeksha Charitable TRUST in Karthika , Nediyedath Road ,Kunnumpuram North, Edapally

Who we are & What we do:
We are, like every one of you, with a ‘passion’ to help others without expecting anything in return except a ‘smile’. We, 4 trustees came together to form a charitable trust after hearing this story…
Tutumol, that is her name. She is born with a condition called ‘spina bifida’ and has been confined within the two rooms and a hall in her house, and crawls around in her home. She did not see the world outside her home as her parents were not having the money even to buy a wheel chair. Tutumol was the inspiration for our Chief Patron, Mr. Gopinath, who immediately thought of buying wheel chair for her and also started a service of hiring a van to take such paraplegics to see the world outside. This 24 year old girl has not seen the dancing of waves in a sea, travelled in a train or plane, tasted a burger or pizza in a restaurant like any teenager of this century. Mr. Gopinath bought a van and fitted with equipment to lift the wheelchair and started a daily service of taking minimum 2 paraplegics every day to malls, parks and beaches. This was not an easy task. Most of the parents wanted to send their child outside because of various reasons. For Some Life turns upside down with a sudden unexpected disability out of accident or serious medical reasons; they live their remaining life inside the house considered as burden for family; For some; born with disability is disgrace to family; they are neglected, ashamed to take them along outside.

Most Paraplegics are neglected by family, society and government in spite of having law in every country.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was passed by the UN General Assembly in December of 2006 and came into force on May 3, 2008. The CRPD is one of the nine human rights treaties of the United Nations. It signifies a change in the perception of people with disabilities as objects of charity and protection to individuals who have rights that must be respected and guaranteed by states.
When Tutmol climbed the elevator for the first time in a Mall in Cochin; she started screaming thinking the world around her is coming down. On the roads she thought that the big transport buses were going to ride over her and was screaming again. Such was her exposure to the outside world.
