Indian History Congress (IHC) at a glance1. Largest and oldest Association of Academicians in Humanities and Social Sciences:
It is the largest and oldest body of academicians in Humanities and Social Sciences. Started in 1935 at Poona, the IHC has about 10000 members.
2. Uninterrupted holding of Annual Session:
IHC has been holding the annual session uninterruptedly since 1935, except in the year 1942, 1962 and 1971.
3. Discussion on wide ranging issues
Each annual session comprises six parallel sections – from Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India, Countries other than India, Archaeology and Contemporary India ¬; the presidential address, sectional presidential addresses delivered during the Session are major interventions in the latest historical researches. Significantly enough, about 1200-1300 research papers are presented and discussed during the Session. Many of the globally acclaimed historians and social scientists are associated with the Congress. Prof. Amartya Sen delivered the Presidential address in 2007 Calcutta Session.

The proceedings of the IHC are continuously published since its inception.
Brief Profile of the Indian History Congress
The Indian History Congress (IHC) was established on 8th June 1935 in Poona, and it was called “All India Modern History Congress”. Sir Shafafat Ahmad Khan was its first president. At the second session in 1938 at Allahabad, All India Modern History Congress was rechristened as the Indian History Congress. Since then, the IHC has remained the largest academic and professional body of Indian historians. Today IHC boasts of about 9000 members.
As defined by its constitution its primary objective is the “promotion and encouragement of the scientific study of Indian history”. It holds annual sessions and publishes their proceedings mainly comprising research papers. Seventy-three annual sessions have been held so far except in the year 1942, 1962 and 1971. It also publishes various monographs and collections of papers. It has sponsored the publication of a Comprehensive History of India, many volumes of which have been published. The Indian History Congress stands for collaboration with historians throughout the world, and promotes the study of the history of countries other than India. The 74th session will be held in Cuttack at Ravenshaw University from 28-30 December 2013. This is for the second time that Ravenshaw University is going to host the IHC Annual session. In 1949, the 12th session was held in the erstwhile Ravenshaw College. The 38th session of the IHC was held in Bhubaneswar in 1977. In addition to six academic sections, a special panel on Contemporary Odisha entitled “Society, State and Region: Historical and Contemporary Orissa” is proposed during the IHC.
