Zanzibar sits nestled under shady tamarind and neem trees, just a short walk away from the Bay of Bengal. Designed to be the winter residence of renowned Indian author Anita Nair, Zanzibar is part of Cholamandal Artists’ Village, home to the creative souls who inspired the Madras Movement – a turning point in India’s art landscape. Here, artists and creative minds of various hues live and work together in probably one of the world’s oldest surviving art communes.

Situated just 17 kms from the city, on the East Coast Road, Zanzibar offers convenient dining and shopping options nearby. There is plenty to see and do as well. From the rock temples of Mamallapuram to the Crocodile Park to the folk art centre Dakshin Chitra. Also at hand, is the Cholamandal Museum of Art – housing masterpieces right from the 60s. If you are lucky, you might even catch an art show or a Friday art house movie.

Zanzibar is designed to inspire and stimulate your mind. The residence houses the author’s favourite writing desk and some of her private collection of artworks, and a small but fine library of books. With its free flowing spaces, play of light and the ever present sea breeze, Zanzibar is a place that lends itself to work or play. Start that novel you have been planning to write, finish that project report, put that finishing touches to a campaign, or simply laze around while watching the sunlight filter through a canopy of green...we leave it to you to decide how you wish to spend your time at Zanzibar.
