About Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in Office of the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Kedarnath Wildlife Division, Chamoli

This page intends to share information about Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and to showcase its picturesque landscape, flora and fauna, aimed at creating awareness about the same and the need to conserve this invaluable nature's blessing to mankind.
Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 975.20 sq.km., in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand. It was established in 1972, aimed at conserving the endangered species, Himalayan Musk Deer (Moschus leucogaster). The sanctuary houses a range of forest types like temperate forests, coniferous forests, sub-alpine forests, alpine scrubs etc. Apart from, Himalayan Musk Deer, the sanctuary is also a home to other important species like Snow Leopard, Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Serow, Himalayan Black Bear, Brown Bear, Bharal, Goral, birds, butterflies, fishes, reptiles, amphibians etc.
Three out of the Panchkedars, viz., Tungnath, Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar are situated inside the sanctuary. Also, the trek route to the holy shrine of Kedarnathji passes through the sanctuary.
Some of the places for tourists and wildlife enthusiasts are Anasuya, Kanchulakharak, Shokharak, Chopta, Tungnath, Chandrasila, Deoria tal, Panaar, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, Kedarnath etc.
