‘Studio Goppo’, as we have named it, is an initiative towards developing a space for enhancing the understanding of, primarily, analogue photography. ‘Goppo’ is a Bengali word, means small stories which further defines the purpose behind establishing this studio that is to bring together all those small stories, ideas, practices we carry regarding the world of photography.
Although the studio is dedicated to photographic practices (both theoretical and practical) but our approach in developing it would be multidisciplinary. We believe that each and every subject we specialized is interwoven. They get a dynamic, flourishing stance only when there is multidisciplinary outlook. Our studio would enhance and achieve from the collaboration of various opinions, inventions and perceptions.
Aims and objectives of Studio Goppo are to re-visit the techniques and practices which prevailed in the early phase of photographic developments. We are also interested in establishing an archive of traditional, local methodology which exists or existed for photographic practices in India. The studio will also highlight on the historical, theoretical and documentary base research works related to photography thus Goppo, as a studio would be enhancing both practical and theoretical experiments in photography.
Our studio’s vision is to create a common larger platform were likeminded visionaries could come together generating a flux of further possibilities, opinions, ideas and practice in photography.
Infrastructure
700sqare feet space is dedicated as a studio space with a proper darkroom and it can accommodate at list five artists at a time to work with alternative/ historical photographic methods. The studio offers scope to research and experiments theoretically and practically on historical photography and related practice. The studio is equipped with books, journals along with other setups needed to explore numerous processes to explore and experiment with. This is probably the only studio in the country which can offer artist and researchers to practically work with the following methods.

The studio welcomes Artist, Art historians, people working with social history, one who is doing research on photography particularly 19th century photography and anyone who is interested to learn or explore 19th century photography.
The studio will offer workshops time to time and will be notified in this website.
The studio is also planning to offer ‘Artist in residency’ programme soon.
