We started our ambitious project in October 2014, on a plot of land 28km outside the beautiful historic town of Jaisalmer. Our first task was to fence a 600x600 feet desert area, to protect it from goats. We then started to plant trees in the desert, and dug wells. Despite the desert environment we only need to dig 10 feet deep to access sweet water, enabling us to water the trees and create vegetables patches. So far we have planted about 800 trees and hand dug three wells. A family is now living close to the garden and is taking care of these plants, with considerable difficulty since their main activity is goat keeping. We are working according to permaculture principles, and have attended Permaculture Design Courses in Jordan and Tanzania.
Khameesh, one of the founder of the Project has established contact with a worldwide organization. Thats profoundly concerned about declining natural resources such as trees, soils and food security and especially water security. Our present agricultural systems are over stretched due to an enormous expansion of human and animal population, due to misuse of water and soil resources, and the tree cover across the subcontinent is in steady decline resulting in crisis Birds & Animals disappear. 'Greening Jaisalmer Society" has decided to implement a strategy of making Golden Jaisalmer also into an example of better environmental practices, of educating the young to understand our dependence on the natural world about us and by creating garden parks to schools in the locality and promoting enthusiasm amongst all citizens to improve and beautify this city for all its residents. We have good wind powered electricity; the water is sufficient at the moment but tree cover is poor to nonexistent at present, we aim to remedy these problems.
We want to join hands to make our flourishing city an example to the people of Rajasthan and Indian of beauty and educated children, building of green shaded roads and parks educated children.
