Soroptimist International is a non profit organisation .Soroptimists inspire action to transform the lives of women and girl child. The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin word SORO meaning SISTER,and OPTIMA meaning BEST FOR WOMEN.
From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland,California,in 1921, through to present day where 3000 clubs are flourishing throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve the best for women in every sphere of life.
Soroptimist International (SI) has a consultative status in the United Nations.
Violet Richardson Ward was the first President.
