(NEWS),Odisha was formed in the year 2002 as a registered non profit non-governmental committed conservation organization for study research, training and awareness campaigns as well as advocacy related to nature, wildlife, sustainable livelihood and issues on environmental and social justice.
The varied experiences of NEWS family members & out side supporters ranges from environmental science & management, biological and ecological sciences, wildlife conservation & management, policies, laws, engineering, urban planning and development related to environment, democratization and decentralization of processes, community organizing, education and training have brought new developmental era to make the surroundings eco-friendly and sustainable livelihood.
NEWS has taken the predominating role and foremost promoter in state of odisha for the reformation of environmental decision making processes urging that the same be made more participatory, environmentally and socially just. This is the upshot of its never ending initiative to gear up different campaigns which has have been bringing the positive success despite issues related to nature is still contentious and politically sensitive in state & national-level implications. In the acknowledgement of its influencing role, NEWS services have been sought out by a variety of regional, national and international agencies.
NEWS is an honestly well thought-out organization that has achieved high levels of participation in its activities by using the varies experiences of its team.
NEWS has been working by the gross intellectual, materials and obviously financial support of the people & agencies from local level to international levels.
NEWS focused mainly in the following areas:
Study & Research functions include a range of activities from broad-based study & research initiatives such as monitoring and identifying major policy and investment decisions and their impacts, to conducting specific study & research into individual projects to understand their socio-economic and environmental impacts. We continuously update such information and feed-forward to a various civil society organizations in order to influence various decision making levels of the governments.
Documentation and Publication involves specific focus on issues of law and policy relating to nature, wildlife, environment and Conservation. We monitor developments, investments and policies by sourcing of a variety of literature (newspapers and magazines, scientific journals, company profiles, government orders, policy statements, etc.) and make it available to campaigns, training initiatives, media advocacy, lobbying, public interest litigation's (PILs), publications, etc.
Legal Support to local communities and campaign networks to access various legally mandated avenues in ensuring social and environmental justice concerns are not compromised in decisions affecting their life and livelihood. When need arises this relationship advances to supporting Public Interest Litigation by enabling the affected communities to represent their cause by litigation documentation and providing public interest lawyering support. NEWS has independently initiated or intervened with PILs on certain issues when needed.
Training involves development of training modules and conducting of symposiums, workshops, seminars & conferences on a range of topics such as protection of nature, wildlife and environment as well as social justice issues, legislation and policies, perspectives of development, alternatives livelihood, campaign strategies, etc. for a variety of focus groups at local, regional & national levels.
Campaign activities involve addressing environmental and social justice concerns with local communities, the media, administration, legislature, judiciary, business community and the general public.
