The fort has been declared as a historical monument by the Government of Punjab under The Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964. The majestic Fort was consolidated and enhanced in the early 19th century, during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Fort was also home to Gen Dyer for a brief period during the English regime. Gobindgarh Fort has a history pouring out of every brick.
