१८७८ च्या सुमारास श्री गजानन महाराज व-हाडातील शेगाव
नावाच्या एका लहानशा गावात प्रगटले...व इ.स. १९१० ला त्यांनी शेगाव येथेच समाधी घेतली. श्री गजानन महाराज हे विदेही, दिगंबर वृत्तीचे आणि सिद्धकोटीला पोहचलेले संत होते. त्यांच्या वास्तव्याने व चमत्कारांमुळे शेगाव व त्या भोवतालच्या परिसरातसर्वसामान्य भक्तजनांचे कल्याण
झाले.
श्री गजानन महाराजांनी ज्या ठिकाणी देह ठेवला तेथेच त्यांचे समाधी मंदिर बांधण्यात आले असून या ठिकाणी भक्तांची सदैव ओघ वाहतो.
जवळपास ३२ वर्षे श्री गजानन महाराजांचे वास्तव्य शेगाव येथे होते.
येथील समाधीस्थानाची सर्व व्यवस्था ट्र्स्टतर्फेपाहिली जाते.
या ट्न्स्टतर्फेच येथे अनेकलोकोपयोगी व शैक्षणिक कार्यक्रम राबविले जातात.
भक्तांसाठी राहण्याची व भोजनाची व्यवस्थाही केली जाते.
समाधी मंदिराशिवाय श्री गजानन महाराजांच्या जिवितकार्याशी निगडित अनेक दर्शनीय स्थाने शेगावच्या परिसरात आहेत.
शेगांव हा भारताच्या महाराष्ट्र राज्यातील बुलढाणा जिल्ह्याचा एक तालुका आहे.
संत गजानन महाराज बुलढाणा जिल्ह्यातील शेगांव हे प्रसिध्द तीर्थक्षेत्र आहे.
श्री गजानन महाराज यांचे वास्तव्य लाभलेले हे ठिकाण विदर्भातील पंढरपूर असे संबोधले जाते.
महाराजांच्या समाधीस्थळावर एक भव्य मंदीर बांधले गेले असून त्याची व्यवस्था तेथील 'गजानन महाराज संस्थान' पाहते
Gajanan Maharaj from Shegaon (Buldhana District), Maharashtra, India is regarded by Hindus as a saint. A temple inhis name isbuilt on his Samadhi atShegaon."Sant Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan" is the largest temple trust in theVidarbha region.
The early life history of Gajanan Maharaj is obscure, his birthdate being unknown. Biruduraju Ramaraju has tried to establish inhis collection of books called"Andhra Yogulu" that he was a Telugu Brahmin. Some speculate that he might havein fact hailed fromSajjanghad,(which was the native place of Sant Samartha Ramdas). Das Ganu Maharaj has written a 21 chapter biography,"Shri Gajanan Vijay," of Gajanan Maharaj in Marathi. Contemporaries of Gajanan Maharaj identified him by several names like Gin Gine Buwa, Ganpat Buwa, and Awaliya Baba.
According to a legend, a money lender named Bankat Lal Agarwal first saw Gajanan Maharaj in a"superconscious state" on February 23, 1878 ona street. Sensing him to be asaint, Bankat took him home and asked him to stay with him. Legends say that in his lifetime, heperformed many miracles such as giving a fresh leaseon life to one Janrao Deshmukh,lighting theclay-pipe without fire, filling adry well with water, drawing sugar cane juice by twisting canes withhis hands, and curing leprosy of a woman. He died on 8 September, 1910.
Gajanan Maharaj looked upon all religions with equality. Hepropounded "Advaita Tattva" through hisconduct and teachings.
