"Assumption Church is a faith community of the Roman Catholic Church centered in Jesus Christ . We are dedicated to bringing all people to knowledge, love and service of God. Defined by faith, worship and our work toward making God's kingdom the world's".

About the Church:

Nellithope was originally, a part of the Cathedral parish, A land, probably a grove was given by Mrs. Jeanne Dupleix for the housing of poor Christians in Pondicherry. A church was built in the new colony in 1750, but was destroyed by the British. Two old Jesuit Fathers built a chapel there in 1788. The church was built in 1841-51 and independent parish came into existence around 1866 and was looked after by the Petit Seminaire school Fathers.

The church which is 160 years old is the work of the French missionaries of the french occupation of Pondicherry, India. During its 161 years of standing it has gone through many trails and testing times.

The Church produces a 5-8 page monthly leaflet called NELLIMALAR in order to enhance the faith of the community associated with the church by heart cleansing ,faith inducing articles.The leaflet also gives information about the church activities. Articles in Nellimalar are conceived by learned parishioners & our Parish priests and distributed with the help of volunteers. This helps the contributors to grow in godly wisdom and also nurtures their reading and writing skills ..

RECENT PAST:
The Assumption church celebrated its 150th year Sesquicentenary Anniversary in 2001 during the tenure of Fr. A. Thomas.

A new Chapel for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was built by Fr. A. Arulanantham in 2009.

Bosco Hall, which was constructed by Fr. L. Peyroutet in the year 1964 was in a dilapidated state. Moreover the catholic population of the parish has grown up to a 15,000. So the members of the Council unanimously decided that this building to be demolished and reconstructed to a new one with more space. Just as planned the Foundation stone for the new Bosco Hall was blessed by our Parish Priest Fr. S. Kulandaisamy on the 23rd of January, 2012 and the work is in progress. The construction is proposed to be completed by December 2012 with the prayers and funds from the devotees.

At present, the parish is spiritually lead by our beloved Parish Priest, Fr. S. KULANDAISAMY since 2010. He has served as Financial Admiistrator (Procurator) of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore from 2005 to 2010. He is being assisted by Fr. A. ANDREWS MAJELLA since june 2012.

Bearing witness to History and spanning generations, today the Assumption Church stands high and hallowed at Nellithope to bless more generations to come and redeem more souls.
