About Glenogle in Glenogle, Mahabaleshwar

A Brief Description:

On the 19th of February 1897 The Secretary of State for India in Council transferred to Jacob Elias Sassoon of Bombay seven and a half acres of land in Mahableshwar for the princely sum of Rs. 77 and 12 annas per annum to Sir Jacob Sassoon and his heirs’. On this parcel of Land Sir Jacob built a small bungalow as a holiday retreat for him and his family. Sir Jacob passed away in October 1916 and on the 5th of August 1917 the Estate of the late Sir Jacob Sassoon sold the bungalow to Mr. Pestonji D. Patel of Bombay.

To provide a historical perspective between 1897 and 1917 the world lived in interesting times. Einstein proposes his Theory of Relativity, first message to travel around the world, first Nobel prizes awarded, first self-service grocery store opens in U.S., Ford introduces the Model-T, Kellogg's starts selling Corn Flakes, New York City subway opens, Oreo cookies first introduced, the teddy bear is introduced, parachutes were invented, Russian Revolution, the Wright Brothers make the first flight at Kitty Hawk among other things….

The Sassoon’s were a famous family of Iraqi Jewish descent and international renown. From Baghdad, Iraq, before moving to Bombay, India and then expanding their interests to China, England, and other countries in the 18th century, the Sassoon’s were one of the wealthiest families in the world, with a merchant empire spanning the continent of Asia. In India they were the proprietors of 5 major textile mills and were heavily involved in the shipping industry (Sassoon Docks).

Pestonji D. Patel was a self made cotton merchant who came to Mumbai from Ichchhapor, Gujarat in 1880 and worked for a few years with Rallis Brothers, who at the time were large cotton traders. He then decided to branch off of his own and started the firm of Patel Brothers in 1905. In 1921 Sir David, the son of Sir Jacob, the owner of E. D. Sassoon & Co joined hands with Pestonji to form Patel Cotton Co. Ltd. The company grew to become one of the largest cotton traders in India.

Pestonji apart from being a business partner of the Sassoon’s was also a friend and bought the Mahableshwar bungalow, Glenogle for the princely sum of Rs 17,000 in 1917 from the estate of Sir Jacob Sassoon of Bombay.

It has been painstakingly restored by the Patel Brothers who continue to own it.
